I hope you will support the Hawaii County Ban GMO Bill 79. The environmental, cultural, economic and health dangers of GMOs far outweigh the short-term economic and purported agricultural benefits of their creation and use. As a 30-plus year Kona resident horticulturalist, land use and environmental advocate, I see that GMOs offer far less than what it's worth to potentially throw our island ecosystems into unnatural, out-of-balance disarray for the benefit of well-heeled, powerful corporations. And with increasing evidence of the continued, steep increases in revenues earned from organic farming throughout the U.S., while at the same time being good for human health, the environment and local cultures, it's hard to believe that our business and political leaders would consider taking our islands down a dark path so potentially dangerous — a path that would preclude local farmers from being able to join in the future of agriculture which is non- GMO. With so much unknown, so much at stake, and so many reasons to protect our agricultural base, I ask that you support Bill 79. Mahalo for consideration of my views on this critical matter.
