RE: Notification of certificate presentation to George Applegate on July 24, 2013, at
the scheduled Council Meeting.
This is to notify you that I will be presenting a certificate to George Applegate during the
July 24, 2013 meeting of the Hawai`i County Council, recognizing him for his many years of
dedication and service to the County of Hawai`i.
I anticipate this presentation will take approximately 15 minutes.

IN RECOGNITION OF YOUR SELFLESS DEDICATION
TO THE PROMOTION AND GROWTH OF HAWAII, THE BIG ISLAND
George Applegate began his career in Hawai'i's hospitality industry more than 30 years ago as a bellman with the Naniloa
Hotel in Hilo. George's sales and marketing background grew from various positions he held during his employment in the
hotel industry, including management positions in public relations and sales.
George joined the Hawai'i Visitors Bureau, Big Island Chapter,in 1989 as Director of Sales and Marketing,and was named Big
Island Visitors Bureau Executive Director in 2000. As Executive Director, George was responsible for overseeing the Big
Island Visitors Bureau's marketing, membership, and associated programs impacting the visitor industry. During his tenure,
George played a pivotal role in bringing direct flights to service the Hilo-Oakland, Hilo-Los Angeles and Hilo-San Francisco
routes. His global efforts have strengthened the growth and expansion of the visitor industry in Kona and in North and South
Kohala, and have made a positive impact in Hamakua,Hilo and Ka'u. A key lesson that George has taught us is "The best way
to promote Hawai'i Island is to keep the good things good. This means attracting the right kind of visitor, one who has a sense
of adventure,who appreciates the Big Island's authentic spirit of aloha, and all of our natural wonders.”
George has traveled extensively on behalf of the Big Island,tirelessly promoting our County and all the good things that we
have to offer. Throughout his tenure, George has remained true and steadfast to what works for our island and those of us who
live and work within. In June 2013, George retired from the Big Island Visitors Bureau,ending his 24-year career with the
organization. We hope that he will continue his efforts to strengthen and improve a vital part of our economy.
George Applegate has served the County of Hawai'i faithfully for the past 30 years and we wish him much success and
happiness during his well-deserved retirement.
