My name is Chadd Onohi Paishon and am the Senior Captain of our 501C(3) nonprofit
organization Na Kalai Wa'a Moku o Keawe and our voyaging canoe, Makali`i. I write to you in
support of Duane Kanuha's nomination and confirmation as Planning Director for Hawai`i
County.
I have known Mr. Kanuha for nearly 20 years and have always trusted in and relied upon his
judgement and direction.
Duane has always been committed to a balanced approach to economic
development and preservation of the land and culture - a rational
approach that keeps the best interests of the broader community
foremost. He doesn't simply react to who ever is making the most
noise today. Public access, mauka recreation, affordable housing,job
creation,improved medical facilities, educational opportunities, agriculture
expansion, improved infrastructure,
cultural renewal, and environmental preservation are amongst his many
achievements in Kohala over the past 20 years.
As a navigator aboard our voyaging canoes I always need to know and remember where home is
at all times while at the same time possess the ability to see beyond the horizon no matter what
the weather or ocean conditions might be like. It is this ability that allows us to reach our
destination in safety and in health...I do believe that Duane possess the same ability for our home
as Planning Director for the County of Hawai`i.
