Subject: Confirmation of Duane Kanuha to serve as Planning Director
Chair Yoshimoto and Members of the Hawaii County Council:
This letter is written in support of the confirmation of Duane Kanuha to serve as
Planning Director. I have known Duane for thirty years or more and have worked
with him over that period in both his public and private capacities. During that
time,he has shown that he is a decision maker willing to make the tough decisions
while at the same time always being fair. I have been impressed with his ability to
transition back and forth between the differing responsibilities required in a public
position to those in a private capacity. With this extensive background in both
public and private positions, Duane is uniquely qualified to serve as Planning
Director.
It is always rewarding to see someone born,raised and educated in his hometown
grow into positions of ever increasing scope and responsibility. Duane's knowledge
of his community, its people,its needs and its position in Hawaii is genuine and a
tremendous attribute for one who will serve as the Planning Director for his
community. Other attributes that Duane has are his previous experience as Deputy
and than Director of the Planning Department,his position as a DLNR Land Agent
and his service as a Member of the State Land Use Commission. The recognition
and respect of his colleagues on the LUC was shown when he was elected to serve as
its Chair.
Duane's career and experience in private business is both extensive and impressive.
The fact that he served as the Managing Director of the Hilo Office of PBR Hawaii,as
a Land Director for the former Hamakua Sugar Company and then in various
capacities for Surety Kohala Corporation and its numerous affiliates provided him
with extensive private sector experience.

As one who was born in Hawaii,has lived on Hawaii Island for forty-five years with
four children and six grandchildren, I certainly have a stake in the future of Hawaii
County. Having said that,it is with a great deal of pleasure that I would ask and urge
the County Council to confirm Duane Kanuha as Planning Director. Thank you for
the opportunity to submit this testimony.
