RE: Testimony in Support of Duane Kanuha
I would like to express my strong support of Duane Kanuha for Planning Director. I personally known
Duane in a personal and professional capacity for nearly a decade and believe he will provide strong
leadership to Hawaii Island. His background in land use, planning, real estate development and
community service provide the necessary experience for this role. In his previous capacity, Mr. Kanuha
has worked for the Surety Kohala Corporation, Kohala Aina Partners, PBR, and the County of Hawaii to
name a few. As a previous staff planner in the Department, Duane also provides the insights as a line
staffer as well as manager.
In addition, Duane served on the State Land Use Commission (LUC) as the native Hawaiian
representative.This is a much needed perspective on Hawaii Island as Mr. Kanuha will balance the
various perspectives in a balanced and fair approach. During my time with Duane on the LUC, I was
always impressed by his level of preparation, analysis, and thoughtful questions of parties appearing
before the commission. I know personally that he's deeply committed to his culture as a native Hawaiian
and his deep spiritual connections to the land. Again, this is a much needed perspective in today's 215t
century approach to planning and development in Hawaii.
As a resident of the County of Hawaii, I'd again like to express my strong support of Duane Kanuha as
Planning Director and have total confidence in his leadership ability and commitment toward protecting
the public trust.
