I regret that I will not be able to attend your meeting personally to provide our testimony in support of the
confirmation of Duane Kanuha as the County of Hawaii Planning Director. I have weekly construction
meetings for the Mohouli Senior Phase 1 project scheduled at that time.
Please present this testimony to the county council for their consideration.

Subject: Confirmation of Duane Kanuha as Planning Director
Honorable Council Council:
Speaking on behalf of the Hawaii Island Community Development Corporation, we
wholeheartedly support the nomination and confirmation of Duane Kanuha as the
Planning Director for the County of Hawaii.
Duane has been a strong supporter of affordable housing in his prior roles as Planning
Director and in his work in the private sector. While he was working for Chalon he
encouraged and supported our acquisition of land from Chalon to develop our 21 unit
Hawi mutual self help housing project. We also explored other affordable housing
possibilities in North Kohala, unfortunately to date we have not yet found the funding for
such projects to proceed.
As Planning Director, Duane supported the imposition of affordable housing
requirements on resort developers and gained an islandwide perspective on the issues
affecting our various communities.
In short, we believe that Duane is the ideal person for the position of Planning Director
and recommend his confirmation.
This statement has been reviewed and approved by the HICDC Board of Directors.
