Testimony in Support of the Confirmation of Duane
Kanuha as Director of the Hawai'i County Planning Department
Chairman Yoshimoto and Members of the Hawaii County Council:
I have known Duane for thirty-eight (38) years, beginning with his hiring as a planner
with the Hawai'i County Planning Department. During the course of our acquaintance, I have
observed Duane's progression as a planner, Deputy County Planning Director, County Planning
Director and as a member and Chairman for the Land Use Commission, State of Hawai'i. In all
of his roles, which I have been fortunate to witness and experience, Duane has always exhibited
professionalism, a strong work ethic, and a healthy dose of logic and common sense. Duane has
always been a quick study based on excellent analytical skills which permit him to grasp the
issues and develop solutions or alternatives as necessary to arrive at a positive result.
Duane has the ability to communicate the basis of his actions in a manner that allows all
to understand his reasoning whether they may agree with him or not. His "people skills" are
excellent which permits him to be approachable and responsive to people from all walks of life.
His ability to deal with people works well with his administrative skills in running an efficient
"shop" in his various leadership positions.
Duane possesses a strong sense of ethics and responsibility which have followed him
throughout his career. These traits serve to provide greater substance to the decisions he makes
and the actions he undertakes.
I strongly believe Duane would serve the County of Hawai'i extremely well as its
Planning Director and provide the County with the Planning guidance that would be a great
benefit to the County. I urge you to confirm him as your Planning Director. Thank you.
