Re: Appointment of Duane Kanuha-
Director of the Planning Department
Dear Chair Yoshimoto:
I submit this letter in strong support of the appointment of Mr. Duane Kanuha to
the position of Director of the County of Hawaii Planning Department.
I have had the pleasure of knowing Mr. Kanuha since serving with him on the
State Land Use Commission in 2005 and 2006. Shortly thereafter I began to work closely with
Mr. Kanuha in his capacity as a manger of Kohala Preserve Conservation Trust LLC and Kohala
Aina Partners LLC. Having served as legal counsel to both companies, I can attest to the fact
that Mr. Kanuha not only has an in-depth understanding of the complex planning and zoning
laws of the County of Hawaii, but a genuine appreciation for the important role which the
Planning Director plays in land use and zoning decisions for the County.
I firmly believe that Mr. Kanuha's prior experience as a Planning Director, DLNR
Assistant Land Agent, and Chairman of the LUC has enabled him to "see the big picture" as a
long-range planner, while still appreciating the nuances and intricacies of zoning, subdivision
and SMA regulations, and the like. More importantly, I believe Mr. Kanuha possesses those
intangible qualities such as fairness, honesty, integrity and reliability, which make a good
Planning Director a great one.
For the reasons stated above, I respectfully request that the Hawaii County
Council confirm the appointment of Mr. Kanuha to the position of Director of the Planning
Department. Thank you.
