Hawaii County Council:
The purpose of this correspondence is to support the confirmation of Duane Kanuha as Planning Director.
Our company, Island Harvest Inc., has been an agricultural employer in North Kohala since 1991, primarily
farming macadamia nuts. We currently employ 16 full time employees.
Mr. Kanuha, through his association with Kohala Preserve Conservation Trust, has been very supportive of
agricultural use and appropriate public access. He was instrumental by effectively communicating the
importance of sustainable agricultural use on lands designated with "Ag-20" zoning to mainland investors. Mr.
Kanuha's creativity and perseverance helped to keep a 350 acre macadamia nut orchard in one piece, preventing
subdivision into 20 acre parcels, an avoided result that would have killed a sustainable economic unit.
I strongly encourage the confirmation of Duane Kanuha as Planning Director for the County of Hawaii. He will
serve the community well!
