Aloha J,
As you know I've been farming for over 30 years in Kurtistown growing lots of organic local fruits and vegetables.
I urge your support of Bill 79. It's a bill that supports local ag and the precautionary principle.
We know of lots of unintended consequences from 100 years of sugar--arsenic contamination in the soil that won't go
away, pesticides in water wells, lots of Hawaii's best top soil ending up in the ocean from run off, etc. All of these could
pale in comparison to unintended consequences if GMO crops gain a footing on Hawaii Island. More and more studies
are coming out about problems and long term health problems related to GMOs. UH Ag scientist Hector Valenzuela,
PhD can provide you such data.
Please support bill 79 and the precautionary principle for generations to come. There are lots of good jobs and a bright
healthy future in organic ag. Keep our eyes on long term sustainability not short term profits. Our planet is in bad shape
because of a multitude of quick fixes that haven't worked.
