Council Members,
I realize you have a tough decision before you. You must consider the safety of GMOs as well as the possible
local economic effects of deciding to keep them away from the island. Both are important issues to consider.
Truly sustainable (not Monsanto sustainable - for what is sustainable about having to buy your seeds every
year) agriculture is possible for this island. It is already being done here. It is also possible to duplicate what
is being done, for ALL of the farmers on this island. Through natural farming methods such as IMOs
(indigenous micro-organisms) and Bokashi, soil can be regenerated and yields greatly increased, without
spraying chemicals, having to buy seeds every year and without raping the land.
Hawaii island was once a place of production. It can be again and now is the perfect time. As more and more
information surfaces worldwide about the dangers of the process of genetic modification, the demand for
organic food is on the rise. Hawaii's unique geographical location as well as its vast land and year-round
growing season are all advantages in the global market. Let us look to nature and sustainability, the way I'm
sure the ancient Hawaiians did, and keep this land and people chemical-free.
You will hear all kinds of technical jargon about both the supposed safety and dangers of GMO foods. I won't
repeat them here. I will, however, ask you to please not play russian roulette with the food supply here on the
island. There has simply not been enough testing on the safety of these foods for human consumption.
Please pass this bill - for the sake of our children, grandchildren and future generations to come. You have a
chance to make a real difference. Those of us who are committed to educating others about GMOs and true
food sustainability will remember your vote. We will continue to educate around the island and you will
receive the support you need.

PS I will be attending the meeting at the Waimea satellite office tomorrow morning but will have my two very
young (1 & 4) children with me. I'm not sure how this works, exactly, whether my testimony will be read aloud
or by me if I'm there. If I have an opportunity to speak, I respectfully request to do so early so that my children
do not disrupt the meeting or have to sit there too long (something I'm not sure they can do.) Thank you
