Subject: Testimony Hawaii County Council Bill 79
Dear Hawaii County Council Members,
I am a natural farmer. My husband has early onset Parkinson's Disease–Like Micheal J. Fox. The number of
early onset PD has been rising in recent years. Alarming new research published in the Journal Neurotoxicology
and Teratology supports the emerging connection between glyphosate, the active ingredient in Roundup
herbicide, and neurodegenerative conditions such as Parkinson's disease and Parkinsonian disorders. An alarming
new study finds that glyphosate is also estrogenic and drives breast cancer cell proliferation in the parts-per-
trillion range. These are but a few of many diseases that may be aggravated by our broken food system.
It turns out that we are only 10 percent human: for every human cell that is intrinsic to our body, there are about
10 resident microbes. And it appears increasingly likely that these microbes exert an influence on our health as
great and possibly even greater than the genes we inherit from our parents. But while your inherited genes are
more or less fixed, it may be possible to reshape, even cultivate, your microbes.
Not only do the pesticides in GMO food kill off beneficial intestinal microbes in our body, but the GMO genes
are capable of surviving digestion and transfer to our gut bacteria making it into living pesticide factories creating
toxins, weakening peoples' viral defenses and create antibiotic-resistant diseases.
As a farmer, isn't it our responsibility to provide the healthiest produce possible?Are farmers concerned only
about the bottom line and less about the long term health consequences of our people? Further more, when you
take away chem-ag subsidies and the organic-ag penalties, the chem-ag food will cost the consumer nearly four
times more. In a recent Australian study it was found that GM Crops do not have a significantly higher yield.
Ironically, using GMO crops makes us more dependent on a centralized food source, whereas Hawaii needs to
become more independent from outside corporate domination. Farmers have rationalized that they need GMO to
survive economically - not true, as adaptable human beings are, and as I have found, there is always another way.
Therefore, it does not make sense to allow this irresponsible technology into our already dysfunctional food
system. This is not a choice for farmers, but We the People. Hawaii can be self-sufficient and sustainable with
out Genetically Modified Organisms!
