Bowles Telephone President Office (808) 885-5941 Cell 937-2826 Home (808) 885-4759 June 28, 2013 To: Hawaii County Council Members Subject: Testimony on Bill 79 - GMO Dear Council Members, I oppose the proposed amendments to Bill 79 regarding genetically modified organisms. The County Council needs to focus its efforts on the growth of the County's agriculture industries, not hindering them with overbearing, unscientific regulations. One size does not fit all. I was heavily involved in the issues associated with the near death of the papaya industry and the difficulties of trying to find disease free locations for the crop. The crises developed the rainbow strain of papaya through the genetic modification effort and allowed the re-establishment of papaya farming. Science needs to prevail in our agriculture, not emotional reactions and propaganda. The Hawaii County Council should not be party to hysteria and emotion. I strongly urge you to vote against further amendments and if I were a Council member, I would remove Bill 79. Sincerely, Post Office Box 1656 Kamuela, Hawaii 96743
