Strong Support for Bill 79
Aloha Councilmembers,
It is with gratitude for this hearing that I write on behalf of our 7,100 members and subscribers
urging your strong support for Bill 79 to ban GMOs in Hawaii County. We are fully committed
to banning genetically engineered agriculture and preserving the ways of Hawaii.
I urge you to protect our children, communities, and natural resources from the harms of
hazardous GMOs and related pesticides. Extremely low levels of pesticide exposure can cause
significant health harms, particularly during pregnancy and early childhood. We strongly support
the banning of open air GMOs as do the thirty countries and dozen areas in the US who have
already.
Out of all the larger islands, Hawaii is the least contaminated and it must remain so. Please do
not succumb to the biotech industry lobbyists, the only people fighting to keep GMOs are the
ones who are employed by GMO companies. Would you poison the entire island to save a few
hundred jobs? I will submit late testimony with additional details and resources for your
convenience but would like to submit a statement in support of Bill 79 in the meantime. I look
forward to seeing you tomorrow and delivering my full testimony in person.
Best Regards and Malama Pono,
Nomi Carmona

Neurotoxic pesticides are clearly implicated as contributors to the rising rates of attention
deficit/hyperactivity disorder, autism, widespread declines in IQ and other measures of cognitive
function.
Pesticide exposure contributes to a number of increasingly common health outcomes for
children, including cancer, birth defects and early puberty. Evidence of links to certain childhood
cancers is particularly strong.
Emerging science suggests that pesticides may be important contributors to the current epidemic
of childhood asthma, obesity and diabetes.
Extremely low levels of pesticide exposure can cause significant health harms, particularly
during pregnancy and early childhood. I support the banning of open air GMO field testing.
And I support our island's local farmers who practice malama 'aina principles and work with
respect for the life of our island's land, its water and the food security of our island's people.
Please do the same by casting your YES vote to protect the children and families of Hawaii
island.
Mahalo nui,
