Abstract: Glyphosate, the active ingredient in Roundup®, is the most popular herbicide used worldwide. The
industry asserts it is minimally toxic to humans, but here we argue otherwise. Residues are found in the main
foods of the Western diet, comprised primarily of sugar, corn, soy and wheat. Glyphosate's inhibition of
cytochrome P450 (CYP) enzymes is an overlooked component of its toxicity to mammals. CYP enzymes play
crucial roles in biology, one of which is to detoxify xenobiotics. Thus, glyphosate enhances the damaging effects
of other food borne chemical residues and environmental toxins. Negative impact on the body is insidious and
manifests slowly over time as inflammation damages cellular systems throughout the body. Here, we show how
interference with CYP enzymes acts synergistically with disruption of the biosynthesis of aromatic amino acids
by gut bacteria, as well as impairment in serum sulfate transport. Consequences are most of the diseases and
conditions associated with a Western diet, which include gastrointestinal disorders, obesity, diabetes, heart
disease, depression, autism, infertility, cancer and Alzheimer's disease. We explain the documented effects of
glyphosate and its ability to induce disease, and we show that glyphosate is the "textbook example" of
exogenous semiotic entropy: the disruption of homeostasis by environmental toxins.

Abstract:
Glyphosate is an active ingredient of the most widely used herbicide and it is believed to be less toxic than
other pesticides. However, several recent studies showed its potential adverse health effects to humans as it
may be an endocrine disruptor. This study focuses on the effects of pure glyphosate on estrogen receptors
(ERs) mediated transcriptional activity and their expressions. Glyphosate exerted proliferative effects only in
human hormone-dependent breast cancer, T47D cells, but not in hormoneindependent breast cancer,
MDA-MB231 cells, at 10(-12) to 10(-6) M in estrogen withdrawal condition. The proliferative concentrations of
glyphosate that induced the activation of estrogen response element (ERE) transcription activity were 5-13 fold
of control in T47D-KBluc cells and this activation was inhibited by an estrogen antagonist, ICI 182780,
indicating that the estrogenic activity of glyphosate was mediated via ERs. Furthermore, glyphosate also
altered both ERa and I3expression. These results indicated that low and environmentally relevant
concentrations of glyphosate possessed estrogenic activity. Glyphosate-based herbicides are widely used for
soybean cultivation, and our results also found that there was an additive estrogenic effect between glyphosate
and genistein, a phytoestrogen in soybeans. However, these additive effects of glyphosate contamination in
soybeans need further animal study.

Soil, Minerals, and Human Health

I believe the main goal of agriculture is to provide nutrition. Or at least thats what
i want it to be, How many people want agriculture to provide them with nutritious food?
As humans we have chemical bodies that use the nutrients from our food to
create trillions of chemical reactions in trillions of cells every moment.
As a nutritionist, detoxification specialist, and someone who is passionate about
health and healing I know that the human body needs at least 64 detectable minerals to
function healthfully. Exactly how all these minerals are being used in the body is still
being learned by scientists. What we do know is that many of the major minerals are
used in organ, blood, bone, and tissue function. For example human blood needs iron
and copper, our hearts need magnesium, our immune systems need zinc, our thyroids
need iodine, and our bones and teeth need calcium, silica and over 60 other trace
minerals for solid bone density. We need minerals to be strong and healthy.
Where are the minerals in our bodies coming from?
Minerals begin in the soil where they are absorbed by plants. The plants absorb
and transform the minerals into a form that can be absorbed by humans and other
animals. So even if we're eating a steak or ground beef, we are still eating an animal
that ate plants.
Grasses can absorb over 100 minerals in the soil. Cows that eat grass are very
rarely sick. Cows that are fed grain, and especially cows that are fed GMO corn, are
almost always sick. Grain fed cows are basically on antibiotic life support. Their milk
utters give off a sickly puss, and their stomachs become so swollen that many have
heart attacks. It is not uncommon to find masses of tumors cut out by the butcher upon
slaughter.
Grass fed cows are rarely payed any medical attention by ranchers. Their flesh is
healthful and clean. The mineral rich grass they feed on nourishes their immune
systems, organs, flesh, and bones. They fertilize the grass with their feces, and help the
grass build soil.
Grasses promote the growth of insects, earth worms, beneficial bacteria and
mushroom mycelium in the soil. This is very important because earthworms, beneficial
bacteria and mushroom mycelium hold the minerals in the soil and help make the
minerals available to plants. Plants that absorb mineral rich soil thanks to mycelium, are
healthy and strong without fertilizers or sprays.
Our planet is a growing planet. The forests of the planet, when undisturbed by
humans, literally grow topsoil. As plants grow and die and decompose they become
soil. As this process happens over thousands of years, we dig down in the earth to find
ancient cities that are now covered in soil because of the growth of the earth thanks to
the creation of soil by plants growing and dying and becoming soil. This is a natural soil
building process that requires earth worms and micro-organisms to make it all possible.
Without earth worms and micro-organisms we actually see the exact opposite
effect. When the micro-organisms are destroyed we lose top soil and most importantly
we lose minerals that cannot be replaced by petroleum based chemical fertilizers.
Petroleum based chemical fertilizers, pesticides, herbicides, and fungicides kill
the micro-organisms in the soil. When the micro-organisms and mycelium die, the
minerals leave as the top soil is washed away. Around the world, soil is being washed
away 10 to 40 times faster than it is being replenished, destroying cropland the size of
Indiana every year, according to a Cornell University study published on March 20 2006
in the Cornell Chronicle. The same study estimates the economic impact of soil erosion
in the United States costs the nation about $37.6 billion each year in productivity losses.
Damage from soil erosion worldwide is estimated to be $400 billion per year.
Other important findings from the Cornell University study were:
-As a result of erosion over the past 40 years, 30 percent of the world's arable land has
become unproductive.
-About 60 percent of soil that is washed away ends up in rivers. streams and lakes,
making waterways more prone to flooding and to contamination from soil's fertilizers
and pesticides.
-Soil erosion also reduces the ability of soil to store water and support plant growth,
thereby reducing its ability to support biodiversity.
-Erosion promotes critical losses of water, nutrients, soil organic matter and soil biota,
harming forests. rangeland and natural ecosystems.
-Erosion increases the amount of dust carried by wind, which not only acts as
an abrasive and air pollutant but also carries about 20 human infectious disease
organisms, including anthrax and tuberculosis.
This is a quote from the New York Times article "Washing Away The Fields of Iowa'
published on May 4th 2011 :
"According to a new report from the Environmental Working Group, Iowa's soil is
washing away at rates far higher than anyone realized.
For Iowa — and other Corn Belt states facing similar problems —this means an
increasing loss of fertility that has to be replaced chemically. It marks a failure of
stewardship, since these soils will have to feed future generations. And every particle
that washes away causes problems downstream, including sedimentation —which can
increase the risk of flooding —and the alarming dead zone in the Gulf of Mexico, the
result of runoff of the chemical fertilizers farmers apply to make up for lost fertility.
The Agriculture Department says that a "sustainable" rate of topsoil loss for most
of Iowa is 5 tons per acre per year, and the actual average soil erosion is 5.2 tons. But
using Iowa State University statistics and an aerial survey, the Environmental Working
Group concluded that average annual soil loss in much of Iowa is double the federal
government's estimates. This pace of erosion is caused partly by an increasing number
of intense storms. As the report says, it has been exacerbated by a fundamental bias in
federal farm policy and supports. In the dozen years before 2009, Iowa received nearly
$17 billion in subsidies that fostered high-intensity farming and less than $3 billion to
support conservation."
The biotech industry would argue that we have to grow food this way in order to
feed the world. So what are they doing vvith all the corn that is being grown in
demineralized soil? They are using it to make high fructose corn syrup for soda, candy,
and processed non-nutritious toxic junk food that is contributing to an increase in
obesity, heart disease, diabetes, cancer, and every other disease.
The rest of the corn is feeding feed lot cows that are grown in a diseased
environment standing in their own feces. While grass fed cows give us nourishing beef
that is mineral rich and high in omega 3, corn fed cows give us sickly nutrient deficient
beef that is very low in minerals and low in omega 3.
What does this mean for Hawaii? Are we willing to sacrifice our top soil, minerals,
water ways, and human health for this type of agriculture? Just to give jobs to less than
1/2 of 1% of the population here in Hawaii?
Alternatively there are many agricultural models that involve soil building
techniques. That encourage the growth of friendly micro-organisms and mineral rich
soil. With the knowledge and information we have about these methods that are already
being practiced here in the islands, that were practiced by Native Hawaiians sustaining
large populations for thousands of years, without imported food or imported goods, it
seems outrageous that i should have to explain why conventional and GMO agriculture
destroys soil and therefore destroys life.
This information is not up for debate. It is widely accepted, well studied,
mainstream science fact that conventional and GMO farming is toxic to our air, food,
and water.
As i said earlier, our bodies need mineral rich foods coming from healthy soil so
that they may function properly. As long as we continue to destroy soil we destroy life,
and decrease the chances of survival for ourselves, our families, our communities, and
future generations.
This issue is much bigger than GMO's. It question the way we've been doing
agriculture in Hawaii since the sugar plantation were spraying DDT and agent orange
50 years ago that is still in our soil today. When will we wake up to science and the
reality that we need healthy mineral rich soil to live and thrive.
Celebrity nutritionist David Wolfe said "the future of tourism is medical tourism".
We can be a model for the world and attract tourists who come here to experience
health and healing in a toxin free environment where local organic fresh foods thrive
and dominate the market. Where a strong healthy community is thriving and living as an
example of health and healing.
No matter what the testimony is of any of the pro biotech people here today-they
cannot give you any science or substantial information that indicates they are building
soil or creating healthful sustainable foods. They can only give you vague information
that's been given to them by their employers to promote an industry that has repeatedly
ignored the hundreds of independent scientific studies that find serious dangers and
threats in GMO farming. If biotech were to explore the science objectively, they would
have to consider the impact they have on on human life, and the very life force in the
soil itself that is the source of all land based food.
They will tell you GMO farming uses less pesticide, fungicide, herbicide, when
the actual numbers in sales and application are much higher since the introduction of
GMO plants.
Pesticide, Fungicide, Herbicide, Suicide...
There is no-one on the planet that knows enough about GMO plants to say with
any certainty that they are safe. And anyone who looks at it objectively and researches
the subject exhaustively will have to conclude that there are hundreds of scientific
studies that prove GMO plants are unsafe.
If GMO farming substances are as safe as the biotech lobbyists and executives
would like everyone to think, than I'd like to see them spray themselves with the
chemicals that are being sprayed into our land, air, food, and water.
I'd like them to explain how the high fructose corn syrup from GMO corn found in soda,
candy, and processed junk foods is feeding the world.
I'd like them to explain why over 100,000 GMO Cotton farmers in India committed
suicide.
I'd like them to explain why people wear full body suits and respirators when they work
in the GMO fields.
I'd like them to explain why almost all the studies supporting biotech are funded by the
biotech industry, while hundreds of independent published scientific studies indicate
that biotech is unsafe for the natural environment, unsafe for agriculture, and especially
unsafe for human consumption.
