Re: Malama Ka A'ina; cautiously banning of GMO's
Aloha Councilman Yoshimoto,
Although not born here I am a 30 year resident of the Big Island and there is not a day that I
don't take a pause to thank God for the privilege of living in such magnificence. Clean air and water
have become a rarity on this planet, how lucky we are.
There are two forces prompting for your vote, the wave of so called progress and those like
myself who stand firm on maintaining a cautious stance. I do not attest myself to be an expert nor
even particularly knowledgeable on the specifics of this science. However I do know that significant
regions of the planet, like ALL of Europe and Japan have jumped off the bandwagon of Monsanto
and its cohorts. I have also been appalled that the flow of heirloom seeds is being interrupted by this
aggressive industry.
Farmers are being sued who did not plant these seeds but happen to be downwind of other
farms that did, and pollen polluted their non-GMO plantings. In my 67 years I have been witness to
many mistakes, like the miracle pesticide DDT, which had good intent. I would not knowingly eat
food produced by a plant that has been modified not to react to a strong pesticide. What might that
modification do to me? I grow much of my own food and am concerned about how my gardens have
and could been affected.
I admire the caution that countries and continents are taking on this issue. Let slow science
prevail and let's take caution on this issue. Your consideration on this topic is greatly appreciated,
