Honorable Council Members,
I have been a resident of Hilo, Hawaii since July 2004. I began my own small
smoothie business to support my family in August 2007. Our distribution of GMO
free beverages has been successful locally and also in the state of California. I am a
businessman of integrity and will only use non- GMO products for ingredients in my
products because GMO products have not been proven to be scientifically safe.
Before humans consume unsafe products they must be tested scientifically in a
controlled environment otherwise our health and the future health of our children
may be impaired. It is incorrect to experiment directly on humans and plants
needed for human consumption.
I fully support Bill 79. I do not want history repeated as it was 10 years ago in
Oregon regarding GMO testing on wheat intended to sell to Asia. Asia would not buy
the GMO wheat therefore the project was shut down. Now the aggressive pollen and
seed from this "test" has been spread throughout the entire wheat crop from a test
10 years ago. Where is the accountability? Companies testing GMO crops need to
test with integrity,with safe measures. So-called testing on our island is not okay
because it will not be done with secure, safe measures. Unsafe experiments will
definitely affect the natural crops on this island. Natural non-genetically engineered
crops are organic to the environment and must be protected. Please do not allow
experimentation to make natural crops an "endangered" species.
