Thank you for the opportunity to give testimony in favor of Bill 79 regarding the prohibition of further GMO products on Hawai'i Island. I am greatly dismayed that this matter of GMOs should ever have required the persistent and now widespread community protest that is taking place. Had the technology been introduced in an honest, sound, systematic, transparent, labeled, comprehensive and democratic manner - without heavy-handed tactics, revolving doors between government and industry and slipshod approval and regulation of the technology - I think the industry would not be meeting with such suspicion, paranoia and animosity. In almost fifty years of avidly following news and politics, I don't recall such betrayal of the public trust as is evident in the GMO industry/government/university complex, nor do I think there should be any hesitation in placing an immediate moratorium on the technology on Hawai'i Island. Further, I think our local County officials owe it to the public to see that no further expansion of GMO products be permitted without abiding strictly to the Precautionary Principle and to take whatever time it takes to get this right.
