Poindexter, Member J. Yoshimoto, Member From: Carol Gonsalves (789 Hoolaulea St. ; Hilo, HI 96720) Subject: Testimony against Amended Council Bill No. 79 I am opposed to the amended Bill No. 79 relating to genetically modified organisms. I want you to kill this bill ! The original bill No. 79 was a bad bill, and Wille just can❑t go willy nilly and shove in new ideas that are just as bad as the original ones. In the first bill she required farmers to grow Rainbow papayas in high security BL3 glasshouses. This is a containment research type of facility which is never used by the agriculture industry. Can you imagine all of the papaya being grown under glass? It certainly would be unique. But what folly! Under her "improved" bill papayas can actually be grown outdoors; but this would only be allowed "provided that any cultivation or propagation locations have a minimum seven hundred-fifty foot buffer to any adjacent private property. . . . " Again, wiley Willie picks a random solution with no logical basis. Why? Because GMO❑s, she thinks, are a health hazard. EVERYONE in Hawai' i needs to listen up because if you, the County Council, decide to abolish our freedom of choice on what to plant and where to plant, the division you cause will be catastrophic! Law abiding citizens today will be considered criminals if they plant a Rainbow papaya in their yard and their disgruntled neighbor reports it to "Big Sister." The problem is compounded for farmers. There is much more that I resent in this amended bill, and as I think of these things, it just makes me angry! Bill 79 cannot be amended further to make it right. It must be killed. Yours truly, Carol Gonsalves Comm. ►'lo ?-1 ( . ;pis 1 Ref. To: SM G Ref. Dot 0 z 203
