Subject: Bill 79
Country Council:
Council Person, Brenda Ford,
and Council Persons: Margaret Wille, J. Yoshimoto, D. Onishi, Valerie Poindexter, G. Ilagan, Zendo
Kern, Dru Mamo Kanuha, Karen Eoff,
I am sending this testimony in support of Bill 79. I appreciate Council person Margaret Wille for
submitting an important piece of legislation, Bill 79, to amend the county code to safeguard our state
agricultural lands and the people from potential harm cue to GMOs. This island needs your leadership
to protect our agricultural heritage, natural environment and public health.
It is important that we support sufficient basic scientific review of G-M0 technology to insure that no
harm occurs. This includes adequate research on long term effects on the public welfare. We also need
adequate public review and testimony to address any and all potential contamination to the
sustainability of our human and natural environment for generations to come.
As our representative, your educated understanding, in the face of a few biotechnology
corporations, is essential to ensure that our state land is held in trust for the welfare of the people.
The Council passed a resolution in support of GM( labeling bills at this past state legislature 8-1. This
Bill 79 is well researched and a valid basis for strengthening standards and guidelines, regarding the
GMO issue. I am counting on you at this important time. Thank you for your careful
and intelligent consideration.
I would appreciate to hear back from you,
Ross H. c-)
