Aloha, Councilmember:
My name is Merle Hayward and I reside in Hilo. I support Bill 79. I am
responding to testimony on May 14, on Bill 79. I should like to propose that
individuals, businesses or institutions that engage in the production of GMOs in
Hawaii County be required to carry GMO crop/organism liability insurance. It
would be a fair and cost effective remedy for covering the cost of contamination.
The USDA recommends crop insurance, however, as usual, they shift the burden
of the cost of contamination to non-GMO growers. In fairness, it should be the
potential contaminators who pay for insurance to cover any damage to other
innocent growers crops.
