Subject: For ordinance to amend Chapter 14 of the Hawaii County Code 1983
I (Christopher Lum,)
support the ordinance to amend Chapter 14 of the Hawaii County Code 1983. The consequences of
genetically modifying crops significantly outweigh what it provides for the the people of the State of
Hawai'i. Through means of chemical, radioactive, and gene inoculation processes; humans are now able
to change DNA in ways that could not occur in nature. Now such tools render it possible to change
organisms that would take millions of years natural mutation and evolution to achieve. Genetically
Modified Organisms (GMO's) occupy a vast territory of unknown affects on human biology in both
acute and long term senses. The science and technology used to achieve GMO's provide a far less
empirical outlook towards production than the national public realize, and what could be considered
more paramount are the dangers of contamination. It is virtually impossible to keep non-GMO crops
from contamination from crops with Genetic Modification. Though I personally find these issues
important; I would place more importance on how GMO's affect Hawaii as a community. On a national
scale, the people of state of Hawai'i have been self selected to uphold values that have proven
inseparable between it's culture and the land. This ordinance is a platform in which it is possible for
methods of indigenous and conventional farming to continue, and for all people to understand the
integrity of it's methodologies. It is an inalienable right for people to know the means in which their food
is produced, and I would urge each individual to consider the ethics of GMO production and it's affect
on the livelihood and culture of the people of Hawaii.
