Subject: GMO Turning Point
Aloha Councilmember:
You will be glad to know that Chipotle Restaurants have begun to identify GMO ingredients on their
menu, and other will surely follow in order to keep customers coming.

Ben &Jerry's is removing GMOs from all 81 flavors, markets are vowing not to sell GMO salmon
(including our own KTA), Whole Foods is requiring GMOs labeled in their stores by 2014. It won't take
long for a critical mass to be reached. One of the problems is the lack of non-GMO ingredients. This
could be an excellent opportunity for Hawaii Island if we don't infest the environment with more
GMOs.
Japan is using Prince Edward Island to grow canola and soybeans free from GMO contamination. There
is a growing demand for edamame (edible soybean snack) in the US, and for non-GMO soy pet food
(fish food), and both types of soybeans crops are a natural in Hawaii according to CTAHR.
Please remember that one thing we can always count on is that everything changes, and that
consumers want what they want. We can't force an increase in the GMO papaya price. The non-GMO
and organic papayas earn so much more.
Bill 79 safeguards growing GMO papaya as much as possible given the constraints of buffers for GMO
crops that every scientific body recommends.
