Subject: County of Hawaii State of Hawaii Bill No. 79
Dear Council Members,
I am a recent retiree from the Bay Area in California and now reside in Captain Cook. I have long been
interested in agriculture and the tremendous importance of healthy food for our population. I have read
with great interest Margaret Wille's proposed ordinance, Bill No. 79, which amends Chapter 14 of the
Hawaii County Code 1983 (2005 edition, as amended). I would like to go on record that I do strongly
support this new article. I believe that if Hawaii County has an opportunity to regulate Genetic Modified
(Transgenic) Organisms, then by all means it should do so. I believe that there is a very lucrative market
to growing foods using non-gmo seeds and feeding animals non-gmo grains. People are becoming much
more savvy about purchasing healthy food. There just is not enough research or science available to
prove that the gmo foods are safe and healthy for people. I would prefer having my food grown and
produced the way it has been done for thousands of years than using this new unproven way. I just don't
like the idea of eating grains and veggies that have survived being sprayed with roundup or that might
have a pesticide inside the grains. That does not seem healthy to me. And I hate that so many gmo foods
are now on the market, unlabeled, giving the consumer no choice but to purchase them.
As a side note: I totally support labeling foods to alert the consumer that what they are purchasing is or
is not genetically modified. Since there are so many gmo foods in the marketplace, at least inform the
purchaser and let them make their own decision about what to buy.
