Subject: Vote to Approve Bill 79 to Prohibit GMO crops on Hawaii Island
Aloha Hawaii County Council Members.
I support Bill 79 to Prohibit GMO crops on Hawaii Island (with certain exceptions for Rainbow papaya.)
In particular I do not support any GMO that is "Roundup Ready." There is too much evidence of
problems including the development of super weeds which requires even more pesticides.
I do not support GMO corn, even if it is only fed to animals. See

I do not support GMO if the plant is pollinated. Pollinators and drift will affect non-GMO plants.
Certainly GMO is controversial. You only need to google "GMO" or "Monsanto" or "GMO toxins."
There is an incredible number of articles and many studies. Certainly there are methods that come
under the general category of GMO that solve problems and do not cause harm (such as Rainbow
Papaya). I'm unsure about these categories even though they are described pretty thoroughly here:

I trust scientists who are independent or work for government and universities (not funded by chemical
or seed companies) far more than I trust the industry scientists (including supposedly "independent"
scientists who are funded by industry.)
Do we ever learn? Think tobacco, Love Canal, PCB's, asbestos, agent orange, arsenic treated wood,
atomic tests, phthalates. overuse of antibiotics, bisphenol A ... the list goes on and on and industry tells
us "no problem."

Aloha Hawaii County Council Members.
I support Bill 79 to Prohibit GMO crops on Hawaii Island except for Rainbow papaya.
There are too many questions about GMO's. Studies for cause and effect take a long time. It has
taken many years to discover the harm done by various chemicals.
I especially do not want GMO's that are engineered to resist pesticides. Invariably nature will win by
evolving plants that are not affected by the pesticide ...just like bacteria have evolved to resist
antibiotics because of their overuse.
CAUTION is the word ... to protect ourselves and our earth.
