Subject: Bill 79
To all the members of the County Council of the Hawaii County, especially
those of you that we know personally,
Aloha,
We would like to add our voice regarding the pros and cons of Bill 79 and
urge all of you to please vote in favor of the ban on GMO.
While we know this bill is very controversial, it has become an emotional
issue as well.
It seems that whether GMO is good or bad for people is yet to be determined
and still up for long and heated discussions. This bill seems to at least begin
to address the issues that need to be considered before we give blanket
permission to anyone and everyone who wants to experiment on this Island.
Time is on our side.
What we do know is that there is a huge international market at this time for
Non-GMO food. With that in mind, it would seem that the decision we
should be making is obvious.
So many countries have decided not to allow any importing of GMO foods. If
we decide to ban or select any new GMO foods, we would be creating more
jobs and not losing them as so many farm workers fear. There is a world
looking for healthy, naturally grown foods and as an Island with a buffer of
water surrounding us we have the perfect spot to grow and market our
produce.
Some of the other islands have farms growing GMO food and we will be able
to compare production and distribution.We have an opportunity to take our
time and be selective. There is so much we don't know about the long term
effects of consuming modified foods that taking our time would be to our
