Subject: Testimony for Bill 79
Madam Chair and Members of the Committee on Public Safety & Mass Transit :
Aloha, my name is Lee McIntosh and I live in Kau. I oppose Bill 79, which bans GMOs .
This bill is based on fear of GMOs. Governments should not ban something out of
uncertainty or fear. Law should be based on unbiased research and facts .
Extensive research has been conducted and is ongoing.
There have been no documented deaths related to GMOs.
Precautions are taken to address the concerns of surrounding farms.
We have a successful GMO operation based on the Big Island that sells Papayas that are
resistant to the Papaya Ringspot-Virus. They were just approved by Japan for sale there,
a 10 year process. Despite exemptions, Bill 79 will deter scientific research and drive
business endeavors such as this to go elsewhere, causing the loss of jobs and revenue.
Please do not pass Bill 79. Thank you for the opportunity to testify on Bill 79.
