I urge the you to have the heart and strength to pass this GMO bill, and to work for further
limitations to the reckless bioengineering experiments being conducted here in Hawaii.
GMO crops threaten our diversified agriculture through cross pollination of normal plants,
soil contamination, diversion of our precious water for research crops in arid areas,
contamination of our water through pesticide and chemical fertilizer runoff, and evolution of
pesticide resistant weeds and bugs. Why do you think these companies come here to
Hawaii? Because we are out in the middle of the Pacific, and when their experiments go
wrong, they won't be contaminating the mainland now, will they?
At least 35 countries are now labeling GMO, and the real smart countries are out-right
banning them. Let's please remember the 125,000 farmers who committed suicide in India
because their GMO crops fail and they go further and further into debt? How could you
possible support this technology that you and your children are eating without even
knowing it?This is not normal evolution:
*Strawberries with Flounder genes to make them more frost-resistant.
*Corn with human genes to make a spermicide.
*Cabbage with Scorpion genes to make them caterpillar resistant.
*Salmon with growth hormone gene from an "eel-like" fish to make it grow twice as fast.
*Bananas with hepatitis B and cholera virus' genetic material to make vaccine fruit.
*Chickens with human protein genes supposedly to treat melanoma, arthritis and multiple
sclerosis.
*Goats with Spider web proteins to make I a web-like material made from their milk.
Here in Hawaii we have had the following open-air experiments, just a couple for you to
think of, besides the gmo papayas which are ruining the organic farmed crops by cross
pollination.
*Corn with human genes (Dow Chemical)
*Sugarcane with human genes (our own Hawaii Agriculture Research Center)
*Corn with jellyfish genes (Stanford University)
*Rice with human genes (Applied Phytologics)
*Corn with Hepatitis virus genes (Prodigene)
Mmmmmm - yummy, doesn't all of this make you hungry? It's enough to gag a maggot!
Don't you think we should have the right to know what we are eating? Let's not play god
here with peoples food, health and environment. Please stop and think what we are doing
to each other and our world.
