Good Morning!
My name is Amy Shiroma. I am an octogenarian. I grew up in
a plantation camp in the Hamakua Coast. I used to climb
the papaya tree to pick the fruit for the family. The
papaya was big, really big, so big that as kids we used to
carve jack-o-lantern with them.
Unlike today' s papayas the inside was big and hollow with small
white seeds, and the papaya was not sweet, but we just assumed
that' s how it was, but goodness for science, that has changed.
THe plantations used to have HSPA, the Hawaii Sugar Planters ' Assn,
where they, among other functions, used to experiment with
various sugar cane, and have developed the nice yellow sugar cane
which was soft and contained more sugar; they also developed the
red sugar cane which was soft and juicy. Without science, I 'm sure
that would hardly have come about.
What I 'm saying is, researchers , with their divine-gifts, have
developed this process which helps produce better products for
all to enjoy, so let them go on with their effort and let there
be peace among all of us. Thank you.
