Subject: Testimony for Bill 79
Dear Council members,
As residents of the County of Hawaii, we are writing to you today to have our comments entered into the official
testimony for Bill 79, concerning the subject of GMOs and whether or not they should be restricted further(beyond the
already GMO papayas that exists on our island).
We are completely against our County permitting ANY further GMO plants to be planted on our island for two
reasons:
First, there are NO longitudinal studies on the safety of GMOs on humans.
Secondly, there are NO studies on the effects of GMOs on OTHER SPECIES that exist on our island!
Species that could consume GMO foods that have only been tested for short term effects ON HUMANS ONLY might
be adversely affected. It is VERY easy to imagine that birds AND beneficial and necessary insects could consume
certain GMO plants or contaminated plants, and potentially succumb to disease and death from ANY untested-on-
them GMOs or their by-products.
NOTHING could then be done to UNDO what could amount to total devastation of our ecology.
This is not fear talking,this is simple intelligence!
Additionally, we personally know of a papaya grower on island who hoped his long-term papaya field might have
survived contamination from the GMO papayas already here. He recently had his crops' DNA tested, and to his great
dismay learned that his papayas have been contaminated by the GMO papayas. He can no longer hope to call his
PREVIOUSLY non-GMO papayas 'non-GMO.'
Please take these points VERY SERIOUSLY. You are OUR elected representatives. It is OUR welfare you are making
decisions about...all of your decisions affect OUR FUTURES...the future of THIS ISLAND's ecology.
There is NO NEED for ANY additional GMOs to be permitted onto OUR island. NO NEED!
There IS, however, A NEED for extreme CAUTION when dealing with 'living non-natural products'that have NOT
been proven to be safe for our long-term welfare/survival, nor the long-term survival of all other species, many
that our entire eco-system depend on.
