Subject: Laws limiting "GMO" crops
In 1800 the earth had 1 billion people. By 1940 there were 2 billion. In 2000 there were
6 billion. It is predicted that by the end of this century there will be 9 to 10 billion.
For most of human history the increased need for food was met by increasing the amount of
land in cultivation. As this option diminished advances in agricultural technology,
including genetics, enabled the growing population to be fed. If agricultural technology
is not allowed to advance the consequences will be dire.
We must not tie the hands of scientists to improve agricultural techniques nor of farmers
to use these methods.
Hawaii County is for many reasons uniquely well suited for agricultural research. For the
government to assume an anti-science stance would diminish our county' s opportunity to
participate in this important work.
