RE: Bill #79
I strongly support the passage of Bill #79 to limit future cultivation of Genetically Modified Organisms. I
have grave concerns about the contamination of our food supply with GMO's, both from direct human
consumption of those products and from eating meat of animals fed on those products.
The time to limit the production of GMO products is now, before our food supply has been tainted beyond
the return point. At the very least, GMO products should be prohibited until years of scientific study have
passed and it has been proved beyond a shadow of a doubt that there are no dangers. Many foreign
countries do not allow importation of American GMO food products because those governments have
determined that GMO's pose an unacceptable health risk.
There can be no justification for allowing contamination of Hawaii's food supply for financial gain now that
we know the health risks. For those farmers who are now producing GMO crops, I would
support legislation which establishes a time limit for total compliance for cultivation of non-GMO products
only, perhaps offering financial incentives for early compliance.
Let's face this important issue responsibly, ethically, and with a clear understanding that what we do or do
not do at this time will have a huge impact on our beloved island.
Thank you.
