2013 Outstanding Older American Award for the State of Hawai'i
This award honors a special group of Older Americans for their selfless dedication to serving their communities.
Toshiko"Shirley"Ito is one of the shining stars of Hawai'i County and this award is a well-deserved
acknowledgement of her years of volunteerism and community involvement.
Shirley Ito is a key member of several organizations, having served as chairperson for countless committees
and events. Whether she is volunteering with the Hilo Lions Club,Hui Okinawa, UPW Retirees, FCE club,
Halai Kumiai, Niigata Kenjin-kai, Yamaguchi Kenjin-kai, or any of the other numerous clubs and
organizations she belongs to, Shirley, either as captain of the team, or as a team member, unselfishly gives
110% to her assignment. Her efforts come from the heart, she asks for nothing in return and shares her
aloha time and time again.
Shirley can be seen at almost every community event that takes place in the County. Whether she is giving leis,
handcrafted from flowers from her backyard, or taking photographs with her trusty camera, Shirley has a smile
and a kind word for everyone. Shirley is a role model and sets a standard that is hard to for others to emulate.
She continuously gives back far more than she takes, asking only for a smile from those she helps.
Toshiko"Shirley"Ito, in appreciation for your years of dedicated service to the people of the
County of Hawai'i, it is with great pleasure that we recognize and honor you as the recipient of the 2013
Outstanding Older American Award for the State of Hawai'i.
