Mahalo, Nomi Aloha Chair Councilmembers, I will be here in Kailua-Kona until this Friday evening and I would like to meet with you before I go if you would like to meet with me. I have attached a bullet point list of the most crucial pieces of evidence regarding this legislation which is copied below my signature for your convenience. Please, please read it. Incidentally, as I am currently listening to Dr. Ashley Stokes, pro-GMO scientists coming out of UH, particularly CTAHR (College of Tropical Agriculture and Human Resources) should not be trusted as Monsanto has directly gifted CTAHR over $500,000 and their integrity has been compromised. GMO legislation in Hawaii in particular has become my area of expertise and I sincerely would like at least 15-20 minutes with each of you before Friday at 5PM. I have lunch and dinner appointments available as well and will make myself available to you. At the first march on Monsanto's headquarters June 28, 2012 we had 150 participants. In the last six months, more than 11,500 Hawaii residents have literally marched the streets to stop GMO agriculture in Hawaii. That is a 7,566% increase in active advocates who were available on the days of anti-GMO marches in the last six months in Hawaii alone. If we continue at this rate of growth, by this time next year the movement in Hawaii may be as large as 870,090 in a population of 1.392 million. I live in Honolulu, because the Capitol and the Honolulu City Council require constant attention and GMO lobbyists are stalking the halls and sponsoring golf days 5 days a week at the absolute least. I am the former Executive Secretary for the Waianae Coast City Council District I under Tom Berg, who is no longer in office. I fought for the HSAC package including labeling and abolishing the PLDC, my boss and I fought for the package you all agreed on. The two pertinent measures which most concerned our citizens across the state were, as I am sure you know, removed without a vote or a hearing the day before Thanksgiving at 4:30PM. We did everything we could, I am sorry we could not yank the Honolulu City Council into a pono reality of consensus. They refused to hear the issue again until Tom was already out of office, knowing he would introduce a floor draft AGAIN to re-insert the items and then held a Special Meeting which we will never know whether or not was properly sunshined. None of us, NONE Comm. trto cal • 71C Ref. To: rt 14TG 7/5/2013 Ref. Date JUL 0 2 2013 Page 2 of 12 of the citizens concerned about this issue aside from GMO lobbyists and corporate employees attended the meeting because not a single person was made aware and we can find no record of public notice regarding the meeting. I want to say that after dealing with the Honolulu City Council in depth over the last year, where more than $40,000 of GMO related money rests in the campaign funds, I am so blessed to be here and testify before you. The Hawaii County Council is absolutely heavenly in comparison to the blatant corruption of my own City Council. The Honolulu City Council is so primarily useless and detrimental that we are discussing the potential recall of our Chairman with Aikea who helped beat the PLDC, Local 5 (largest hotel workers' union in Hawaii) and Defend Oahu Coalition. Hawaii, the state, is counting on you to malama Hawaii island in a way that is impossible on most outer islands. Learn from our governments' mistakes, we are suffering greatly on Oahu, Molokai and Kauai. You have a golden opportunity and I would like to discuss with you the legislation we need to pursue in regard and addition to Bill 79. The bill is not perfect, but it is the peoples' bill and we are committed to working on the progress and success of this bill to create a harmonious and effective protection for Hawaii island regarding GMOs. This is the first step of many and I urge you to continue this conversation by passing this bill. I support third party risk assessment. For the record, in every single one of the several dozen I have attended in Hawaii in the last year, the testifiers stance on a measure is always cited upon announcement and I hope this Council will develop a policy in favor of stating their position. This is however the second time a GMO lobbyist (Takemoto yesterday, Alicia Maluafiti on HB 174) has accidentally stated their support for an anti-GMO measure. I have not noticed this mistake with citizens opposing GMOs, perhaps the GMO industry is not as clear themselves if our lives are in the hands of their science at this time and they cannot clearly indicate their stance on pertinent measures. I prefer to think they are Freudian slips. Please contact me at your earliest convenience if you are willing to make time to sit with for a short period of time before I leave. If you are unavailable, I am available via Skype, Facetime and telephone. Mahalo and malama pono, may you be richly blessed and rewarded for your pono efforts. The concept touted by opposing minority of this bill is highly ignorant. The chemicals and genetic changes do travel and contaminate the GENES OF ORGANIC AND CONVENTIONAL PLANTS FOREVER. THERE IS NO 7/5/2013 Page 3 of 12 RECALL. This is not coexistence when the existence of GMOs affects the DNA of original plants that have sustained us for 1000s of years. That is not co-existence, that is hostile genetic takeover. If I am your neighbor, and I have no lymph nodes, and I enter your home and forcibly remove your lymph nodes so we are the same, am I helping you? The definition of coexist: Exist at the same time or in the same place. If I'm organic, I can exist and it doesn't hurt you. If you are GMO and you exist, you are hurting me, you take away my genetic heritage and destroy the environment in which I live, my natural bee related pollination, my genes and my health. You are scientifically taking away from my ability to exist. This is parasitic, the very definition of an invasive species. -I contend that rather than being divisive, I have never seen so many Hawaii residents united. When was the last time, 11,500 people in Hawaii marched for any cause? Hawaii island has a smaller movement, because you are not already experiencing what we are experiencing on Oahu, Molokai and Kauai. On Oahu, 2,500 residents marched down Kalakua Avenue in Waikiki on May 25th, in solidarity with more than 2 million people worldwide to stop GMOs. We have more advocates in just one march on one island than this entire industry employs in the State. That day about 4k statewide participated. -At the first march on Monsanto's headquarters June 28, 2012 we had 150 participants. In the last six months, more than 11,500 Hawaii residents have literally marched the streets to stop GMO agriculture in Hawaii. That is a 7,566% increase in active advocates who were available on the days of anti-GMO marches in the last six months in Hawaii alone. If we continue at this rate of growth in one year, the movement in Hawaii may be as large as 870,090 in a population of 1.392 million. -The only people dividing themselves out are GMO papaya farmers and ranchers, who appear to have been misled (likely by GMO industry contacts) to believe that Bill 79 would stop them from continuing the damages they have already enacted. The pro-GMO farmers and ranchers fail to understand co-existence with GMOs is impossible or accept the fact that as the bill stands, they are exempt from prohibition of current practices. The only co-existence I can see is if GMOs are contained to warehouses and secured laboratories only and even still, we risk unintentional, undesired contamination. The organic community has offered to take in the GMO papaya farmers and help them transform their agricultural practices. Incidentally, when GMOs exist we have no choice. - As per Executive Order 13112 an "invasive species" is defined as a species that is: 1) non-native (or alien) to the ecosystem under consideration and 2) whose introduction causes or is likely to cause economic or environmental harm or harm to human health. http://www.invasivespeciesinfo.qov/whatis.shtml -What is more important to you, are you willing to willfully expose 186,000 people to genetic and chemical experimentation and agriculture banned in most of the modern world to save a few hundred or a thousand jobs? -This bill does not at this time affect GMO papaya farmers. I support this bill in its original form. As it stands I move to strike all amendments unique from the original draft and while I would like Hawaii to be GMO free at this time, if I were a politician I would probably allow existing GMO papaya at this time and address it specifically in separate legislation, ranchers will have time to plant non-GMO by the time this goes into effect. You do not have to grow GMO alfalfa or feed, you have the freedom at this time to grow non-GMO. This bill does not stop ranchers from purchasing and using GM feed, nor does it prohibit any GMOs existing prior. I am concerned about the medical and agricultural research facilities will only allow 7/5/2013 Page 4 of 12 GMO companies to enter under a different guise uninterrupted. I move to strike all amendments unique form the original draft and at this time allow GM papaya and prior existing crops for this temporary situation. This bill runs for 3-5 years, this is the first step. Secure what you have now and address the existing GMOs in future legislation. The farmers and the cowmen should be friends. -I believe if you are wise, you will seize this remarkable opportunity to keep pure and pristine the environment of Hawaii island. The land will become more valuable, more rich in soil than ever before and what is more attractive to true farmers working toward sustainability? GMO contaminated, chemical saturated agricultural land or clean, pristine, organic soil preserved by the distance of water? If you want to maintain and increase the precious condition of this island with 13 climate zones which can literally grow any good crops for all the islands. -I live on Oahu where the majority of GMO companies in Hawaii are headquartered. I have been poisoned three times by pesticides from protesting at the gates of Monsanto and Syngenta in Kunia. These fields are across the street from residences. At 5 minutes standing at their property boundary, even with a breathing mask, you feel the burning, the stinging on your skin from the chemical dust, your nose and your eyes start running. When Monsanto began spraying pesticides with 150 protesters at their gate, the pesticides literally changed my voice, it was the scariest physical reaction I have ever had to anything. I sounded as if I had hormone therapy, my lymph nodes were as large as ping pong balls. -By the way, the atrazine found in Waimea Middle Schools' drinking water changes the sex of frogs. The urine of a male worker spraying atrazine has 24,000 the amount of atrazine it takes to chemically castrate a frog. Dr. Tyrone Hayes: "If you are a male exposed to Atrazine, your testosterone goes away, so you're demasculinized, or chemically castrated," he said. "And you're also feminized because you're making estrogen, which you should not be doing as a male." Women are not usually allowed to spray, because they start hemorrhaging almost immediately. http://thegardenisland.com/news/local/experts-atrazine-a-real-threat-to-westside- residents/article bb8ba5bc-855b-1 1 e2-85c9-001a4bcf887a.html -Meet Michael R. If 94% of US soy is GMO and 70% of the soy failed and required crop insurance subsidization, what does that tell you? http://farm.ewg.org/ -Substantial equivalence vs. patent rights; Substantial equivalence is the argument made by the GMO industry to insist that GMO crops are no different from conventional crops and thereby should not be subjected to additional regulation. How is this possible when GM crops are patented? So to the patent office, the gene is a unique invention that deserves to be patented and owned, but to the public, it's "substantially equivalent" and we should not be bothered by the difference in standards and accountability. -Food and Drug Cosmetic Act states if harm to animals or humans shown in studies, moratorium must be placed. "The largest recorded judgment made thus far in favor of Monsanto as a result of a farmer lawsuit is $3,052,800.00. Total recorded judgments granted to Monsanto for lawsuits amount to $15,253,602.82. Farmers have paid a mean of$412,259.54 for cases with recorded judgments." -Two of thirty GMO babies surviving have the DNA of three parents, two women and one man. Gene pool contamination, thanks a lot. Please defend Hawaii island now, you are almost the last island left which has not been nearly destroyed and contaminated by GMOs. -This is an arrogant technology, arrogant lobbyists, arrogant corporations, ignorant supporters of open air GMOs, sadly. YOU MUST MAINTAIN THE GMO COMPANIES' PERMISSION TO STUDY THEIR PRODUCTS. Permission is denied regularly, that is why we have less research particularly in the US, where Monsanto has written and paid for its' own Congressional protection act. The technology is so imprecise, that in order to even know whether or not the new genetic insertion has successfully implanted in the other species, they have to attach antibiotic markers in order to test for the presence of antibiotics and therefore determine whether or not the transmission was successful. As antibiotic resistance rises in our communities, myself being one of many people who has "become" allergic to antibiotics, we need to reduce and eliminate our consumption of food-based, genetically engineered antibiotics. -I detected $391,000 of GMO money in the Hawaii State, House, Senate and Honolulu City Council as of August 2012. If you include the wives and daughter of the top two GMO lobbyists, the figures nearly double, and these women are not registered. This is only what's on the books. -More than 90% of Hawaii's food is imported, this is foolish. You have 13 climate zones here. You can grow enough food for the state. You can have the best farming land in the world if you get the GMOs out NOW. Learn from India, where every 30 minutes a GMO farmer commits suicide. The GMO companies take advantage of uneducated farmers and sell them on the technology, failing to explain that they need to re-purchase seeds each year, associated chemicals and pesticides/insecticides/herbicides. Majorly GMO Bt cotton growers, farmers and also not told Bt cotton takes at least double the water of India's native cotton. When their farms are destroyed, their fields cannot produce, they do not have money to pay (primarily Monsanto) and in India, upon suicide, the family is forgiven of any debt held by the dead. Monsanto sends lobbyists throughout India to fight for the right to take whatever remaining assets the impoverished family has once the male spouse of the home has committed suicide. As you have heard, the majority are killing themselves by drinking Roundup. The policy statement, "Pesticide Exposure in Children," and an accompanying technical report are published in the December 2012 issue of Pediatrics (released online Nov. 26). Prenatal and early childhood exposure to pesticides is associated with pediatric cancers, decreased cognitive function and behavioral problems. According to the AAP, recognizing and reducing children's exposure to pesticides will require improved medical training, public health tracking, and regulatory approaches. The AAP recommends pediatricians become familiar with the effects of acute and chronic exposures to pesticides; learn what resources are available for both treatment of acute poisoning and addressing lower dose chronic exposures in children; and understand pesticide labeling. Pediatricians should ask parents about pesticide use around the home and yard, offer guidance about safe storage, and recommend parents choose lowest-harm approaches when considering pest control. Pediatricians should also work with schools and government agencies to advocate for the least toxic methods of pest control, and to inform communities when pesticides are being used in the area. The policy statement also makes a number of recommendations for government, including specific recommendations related to marketing, labeling, use and safety of pesticides to minimize children's exposure. http://www.aap.org/en-us/about-the-aap/aap-press-room/pages/AAP-Makes-Recommendations- 7/5/2013 Page 9 of 12 to-Reduce-Children%27s-Exposure-to-Pesticides.aspx?nfstatus=401&nftoken=00000000-0000- 0000-0000-000000000000&nfstatusdescription=ERROR%3a+No+local+token -Abhorred to discover Dennis Gonsalves claim that we can still sell organic papaya if it's been contaminated because only the seeds will be GMO. The most consistent finding was an association of acute nonlymphoblastic leukemia risk with pesticide exposure. Risk estimates for parental pesticide exposure were substantially increased for children under age 6. Moreover, there were significantly elevated risks for direct exposure of the child to pesticides in the household for maternal exposure to household pesticides at the time of pregnancy. The study found that conventional plant breeding, not genetic engineering, was responsible for yield increases. Their claims of benefit are false, the emperor has no clothes. Biotech companies are not decreasing pesticide use, it has increased. The plants that aren't engineered to be resistant to massive chemical spraying have toxins and pesticides engineered into the actual plant so now we can just eat genetic pesticides instead of the liquid form. http://www.tandfonline.com/doi/full/10.1080/14735903.2013.806408#preview -No ringspot virus in Hawaii since the 1970s, 1991 Papaya invention, Puna field testing, 92 PRSV breakout, 98 approval (1970s) -World Food Prize sponsored by Monsanto, World Food Prize, won by Monsanto - Introduction and eventual failure of SB727 to strike the Counties' rights to protect the life and health of County residents? Who do you think fought to take away the right of the government to enact laws to protect the life and health of its' citizens? It was the same biotech industry, paid lobbyists here today who have donated hundreds of thousands of dollars to Hawaii politicians who lobbied to remove the power to protect life, and health. The GMO industry, spends money, paying lobbyists, to fight against our rights to protect our life, and health. This bill made it through the Senate (huge surprise) and was killed in the House, or we could not have this conversation. -For these reasons and many more, Babes Against Biotech has adopted a policy to generously 7/5/2013 Page 12 of 12 campaign in favor of those legislators who support GMO regulation, labeling and prohibition. -In the same token, our policy states that any legislator voting against GMO labeling, against GMO prohibition or in favor of any pro-biotech legislation will be added to our list of The Unelectables. We will work against their re-election regardless of whether or not they have received GMO campaign funds and in support of superior opponents who respect our rights to life and health as GMO is the number one priority of the majority of our members and subscribers. There are currently 7,400 of us. We love all human beings and cannot risk having in office any politician who does not support our ability to reproduce and protect our earth. We apologize if this is an inconvenience to you, however we believe the pollution of our genetic stability of life as we know it as a far greater inconvenience. 7/5/2013 -You know natural and GMO cannot CO-EXIST. The concept touted by opposing minority of this bill is highly ignorant. The chemicals and genetic changes do travel and contaminate the GENES OF ORGANIC AND CONVENTIONAL PLANTS FOREVER. THERE IS NO RECALL. On Oahu, 2,500 residents marched down Kalakua Avenue in Waikiki on May 25`", in solidarity with more than 2 million people worldwide to stop GMOs. - As per Executive Order 13112 an "invasive species" is defined as a species that is: 1) non-native (or alien) to the ecosystem under consideration and 2) whose introduction causes or is likely to cause economic or environmental harm or harm to human health. http://www.invasivespeciesinfo.gov/whatis.shtml -What is more important to you, are you willing to willfully expose 186,000 people to genetic and chemical experimentation and agriculture banned in most of the modern world to save a few hundred or a thousand jobs? I am concerned about the medical and agricultural research facilities will only allow GMO companies to enter under a different guise uninterrupted. When Monsanto began spraying pesticides with 150 protesters at their gate, the pesticides literally changed my voice, it was the scariest physical reaction 1 have ever had to anything. "And you're also feminized because you're making estrogen, which you should not be doing as a male." YOU MUST MAINTAIN THE GMO COMPANIES' PERMISSION TO STUDY THEIR PRODUCTS. The policy statement also makes a number of recommendations for government, including specific recommendations related to marketing, labeling, use and safety of pesticides to minimize children's exposure. http://www.aap.org/en- us/about-the-aap/aap-press-room/pages/AAP-Makes-Recommendations-to-Reduce- Children%27s-Expos_ure-to-Pesticides.aspx?nfstatus=401&nftoken=00000000-0000-0000-0000- 000000000000&nfstatusdescription_ERROR%3a+No+local+token -Abhorred to discover Dennis Gonsalves claim that we can still sell organic papaya if it's been contaminated because only the seeds will be GMO. The most consistent finding was an association of acute nonlymphoblastic leukemia risk with pesticide exposure. Risk estimates for parental pesticide exposure were substantially increased for children under age 6.
