Subject: Yes on bill #79
I am writing to encourage all council members to vote yes on bill#79. The farming of GMO crops uses almost twice the
amount of toxic pesticides and herbicides as other conventional crops. All of which contaminates the groundwater we
drink and the air we all share. There is so much air pollution from our active volcano we should not be subject to toxic
chemicals being widely and openly sprayed for the sake of an agriculture industry that is experimental and already
receiving huge backlash from around the world. GMO farming is not sustainable for future generations, nor has it been
proven safe for this or any population. Please vote yes on bill#79, blocking any new GM crops from being planted on
Hawaii island. Please do it for the children, and their children.
P.S. I understand many of the farmers fears that this bill could put them out of work, but the bill has been amended to
protect already existing crops, so I feel their argument has been addressed and handled adequately.
