Aloha Mr.Yoshimoto,
A ban on GMO agriculture is in place in many regions of the world today. By now we all know why people do not want
transgenic'frankenfood' and why the bans on GMO technology are increasing everywhere. Many US counties have
banned GMO crops to protect their jurisdictions from noxious GMO technology. Bill 79 would protect our island from
the reckless GMO crop experiments occurring on Kauai, Oahu, and Molokai. Bill 79 protects our aina from open cross
pollination by patented GMO crops, and from GMO induced superweeds and insect collapse disorders.
Blocking GMOs would benefit Hawaii Island creating a reputation as a haven of wholesome food production. Non-
GMO status for our island would open more markets than it might close.
Our wonderful County Council voted 9-0 to protect against GMO coffee and kalo.
GMO corporations had every opportunity to prove they could coexist with natural agriculture, but they failed to
convince the public they could. In fact they proved often to be predatory and monopolistic bad neighbors. GMO crops
in open field pollination have contaminated surrounding non GMO seedstrains, and then the non GMO proprietors were
hauled into court for patent infringement or forced to stop saving seed once their seed become contaminated with
patented genetics. We cannot allow this business model to become established anywhere that values food
sovereignty. We cannot allow the contamination of valuable heritage crops and organic food that cannot be marketed
if contaminated. GMO 'coexistence' has brought economic devastation to traditional Indian farmers. The truth is GMO
agriculture is designed to create dependency on patented organisms and to eliminate competition from traditional seed
saving.
