Millions of farmers all over the world willingly choose genetically engineered crops because of their economic and environment advantage, but Bill 2491 would take that choice away from our Kauai farmers. The EPA extensively regulates pesticides. When a pesticide is approved beyond the experimental stage, conditions are set for its safe use. Farmers use federally approved pesticides as outlined in the labeling and use instructions. The EIS and moratorium will hurt the economy A moratorium on growing GMOs on Kauai will impact the farmers who grow these crops, threatening the county and state economy. More than 1,000 residents who are employed by the businesses that grow or use GMO crops on the island could effectively lose their jobs. In addition, if these businesses were unable to grow new crops, there would be no reason to continue to keep their business on the island. Unnecessary mandatory disclosure Much of the requested data is already available. Anyone can visit the public website http://www.isb.vt.edu/data.aspx to search for data provided by the USDA about field trials. The exact locations of field tests may be kept private from the general public for a variety of reasons, including ensuring that the scientific integrity of these tests is not disturbed, to keep members of the public from going onto the field at times that they might be harmed by the activities in the field, to protect workers in the field, and to reduce the potential for sabotage or destruction of the trial. Inouye says that there is no validation about the safety of eating anything GMO; says that a German professor found "pieces" of GMO Bt corn in chicken parts and others that are not"digested"(hhmmm how about organic pieces which also are not digested and are valuable in preventing irregularity- bowel movements, Inouye); claims that GMOs are not safe to eat cos of bacteria and viruses, which love to destroy organic products; claims that papaya is more susceptible to contamination when the little coffee borer is just having a "party" while consuming 100s of acres of coffee beans (how does that feel, county council of 2008 who banned GMO coffee beans?) and Inouye wants "fairness" for those who want to produce items in the "more lucrative, higher- premium food market" (which is a niche business only and will never feed "the masses").... You want proof?? I am a 70 year old product of GMO beef, corn, soybeans, chicken parts, eggs, pork products, milk, cheese, butter, potatoes,etc; lived in the epicenter of GMO, Iowa, for 48 years and have suffered NO ILL-HEALTH or ill-effects by consuming GMO PRODUCTS. We (family) used to eat field corn in lieu of sweet corn from the garden - no ill effects....The hysterical testimony offered by the uniformed anti-GMO is just that, hysteria. I am living proof that one, and millions have benefitted, can live very successfully in a GMO edible lifestyle and my health is AS GOOD OR BETTER than any person in the State of Hawaii, even at my age....stubborn yes, no cure for that. More people will suffer ill-health from organic pesticides, cigarettes, car accidents, falling down stairs, legal drugs, illegal drugs, hospital visits, medical prescriptions beer/alcohol, pocololo (plus the myriad of items consumed in the jungle), etc. than from eating GMO products. Good health is determined by what is in your head, heart and DNA, and you cannot escape the DNA factor. GMO is progress, as important as progress in childrens' medicine, cancer/ heart/ brain /cell phone/stem cell research, television improvements, education, etc. and as such should not be denied by a minority of people who only want their little piece of"utopia" and do not want to co-exist with progressives. 7/30/2013 Page 2 of 2 A county council of 9 people who have little or no knowledge of farming/agriculture and little or no experience in the business of farming should not be making this life-changing, family-changing decision. GMOs have been a life saver for every imaginable business, families, marriages, churches, schools, associated businesses, and have helped reduce unemployment in the heartland of the USA with no ill-effect to people. Millions have benefitted from GMOs and GMO production on the fallow land controlled by lame land owners would help lower the unemployment rate on Hawaii Island, which is the highest in the state, but is ignored by the hysterics and the county council. GMOs are sustainable, organic non-GMOs are not sustainable....
