Dear Hawaii county council,
My name is Amber Lunsford. I grew up on the island of Oahu and am very passionate about the treatment
of Hawaiian land and the people who live there. It is my home. This is why I urge you strongly to support
Bill #79 banning genetically modified organisms from Hawaii farmland.
I have done my own personal research on genetic engineering and know countless others who have also
done research and we all agree that GMOs are not safe and not ecological. There has recently been global
mass protests urging political figures to ban or at least label GMOs because the public does not want to eat
them. This mass demonstration was called the March against Monsanto, where 2 million people in 52
different countries protested for food freedom. If you pay this bill no attention I can assure you that the
public will not take it lightly. People in Hawaii have already started to vehemently show their opinion on
this topic. I probably don't need to remind you that Hawaii residents have a very strong respect and
connection with nature. If you do not pass this bill I am almost certain there will be much public unrest
and protesting. Oregon residents recently have gotten so upset about GMOs that they burned around 1,500
sugar beet plants. If GMOs begin to poison Hawaiian soil you can expect opposition like this. People feel
very strongly on this topic not only because they believe it's unsafe and un-ecological, but also because it
goes against nature and God.
I urge you to pass this bill, at least until you have done extensive research on genetically modified
organisms from countless sources. Once you start digging for answers you will easily see people who have
researched the topic almost always oppose GMOs, which is why it is banned in so many countries. Like
the bill states, there is no way to regulate the seed integration and on an island organic farmers will
eventually be wiped out. The Big Island is the last Hawaiian island not contaminated with GMOs, it is a
matter or extreme urgency that you do not let it become contaminated. GMOs call for more pesticides and
herbicide use, in fact that is why some plants were modified, in order to be resistant to heavier loads of
chemicals. Some foods even produce their own pesticide or herbicide. Majority of people outright will not
want to eat food that they know contains chemicals and un-natural DNA, which is why corporations have
worked so hard to fight labeling. That should be enough to show you how negatively the public will
respond to these crops. Millions of dollars have been spent by corporations to stop labeling, while they say
it would cost too much. It should also be considered all the people who would never trust Monsanto's
chemicals after their life has been affected by Agent Orange. Agent Orange was a defoliant sprayed over
Vietnam during the Vietnam War to kill off trees, but it had horrible side affects on the people and the
food supply. To this day people are born with horrifying deformities, or out of nowhere their children are
born with deformities. The product responsible for this tragedy was produced by Monsanto, one of the
forerunners for GMOs and a corporation worth billions of dollars. You must realize GMO producing
companies and corporations value profit over people. They do not care about the land they do not care
about the health of the people and they do not care about the sacred nature of Hawaii. It is up to you to
care and protect the people. How would Hawaii's ancestors feel about GMOs?
I say these things with honesty and love and intent to do as much good for this world as I can. I love the
earth and it should be valued as much as people value their children or parents, in truth they are the same.
Hawaii is a very special place in terms of landscape and energy. It is a place full of Aloha spirit and nice
people and beautiful places. It cannot afford this kind of natural sabotage. I hope you understand the
urgency with which I speak to you and take what I say into deep consideration.
