HomeMy WebLinkAboutRES 164 Draft 01 2012-2014 COUNTY OF HAWAII •i �' /_•' STATE OF HAWAII ,▪4.O• F•N' � , RESOLUTION NO. 164 13 A RESOLUTION URGING THE HAWAII STATE LEGISLATURE TO APPROVE A NEW BACHELOR OF SCIENCE IN ENGINEERING (BSE) DEGREE PROGRAM AT THE UNIVERSITY OF HAWAII AT HILO (UH HILO). WHEREAS, engineering is the discipline, art, and profession that applies theory to design, develop and analyze technological solutions, operating at the interface of Society and Technology; and WHEREAS, a BSE degree program would complement existing UH Hilo bachelors programs, such as Agricultural Science, Astronomy and Physics, Mathematics, Computer Science, and Biological Sciences; and WHEREAS, the proposed undergraduate BSE degree program at UH Hilo supports science and technology-oriented economic development opportunities, meets the needs of existing businesses, and builds on the existing technical workforce to help attract new businesses to Hawai`i by producing graduates qualified to enter a wide variety of jobs, including high priority science and technology fields; and WHEREAS,the BSE degree program would provide Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) pathways that build on the educational and vocational goals for County of Hawai`i children from Kindergarten through twelfth grade (K-12); and WHEREAS, the proposed BSE degree program will address Hawai`i's Science and Technology goals by complementing existing STEM-related research programs, offering solid faculty-guided research experiences that will benefit student groups and the community, and ensure graduates are competitive in the global discovery and innovation enterprise; and WHEREAS, the creation of Hawai`i County's first engineering degree program would enhance academic and economic opportunities for the people of the County of Hawai`i and State of Hawai`i; now, therefore, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE COUNTY OF HAWAII, that the Hawai`i State Legislature approve a new Bachelor of Science in Engineering (B SE) degree program at the University of Hawai`i at Hilo (UH Hilo). BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED,the Hawai`i County Council urges the program approval to enable it to commence in the academic year of 2014 to 2015 and to include adequate and accessible engineering education and facilities. BE IT FINALLY RESOLVED that the County Clerk shall transmit a copy of this resolution to the Honorable Governor Neil Abercrombie, the Honorable Members of the Hawai`i State Legislature, the Honorable Mayor William P. Kenoi; Chairperson John C. Holzman, Board of Regents, University of Hawai`i; Interim President David Lassner, PhD, University of Hawai`i; Chancellor Donald Straney, PhD, University of Hawai`i at Hilo; and Dean Bruce Mathews, PhD, College of Agriculture, Forestry, and Natural Resource Management, University of Hawai`i at Hilo.
