SUBJECT: Attendance at the 2013 Hawai`i Island GMO Summit held on August 19, 2013
I am requesting ten (10) minutes on the September 4, 2013 Committee agenda to report my
attendance at the 2013 Hawai`i Island GMO Summit held on August 19, 2013. Dru Kanuha and
Margaret Wille were also in attendance.
HRS Section 92-2.5(e) requires that board members shall report their attendance and the matters
presented and discussed at informational meetings or presentations as it relates to official board
business.

INVITATION: Hawai'i Island GMO SUMMIT-Monday,August 19th
The mission of Hawai'i Island Economic Development Board (HIEDB) is to provide and promote private sector
support and expertise for economic development, diversification and balanced growth in Hawaii County in
partnership with Federal, State, County and private resources. Hawaii Leeward Planning Conference (HLPC) is
dedicated to advocating sound planning decisions and effective government process to promote long-term benefits
for Hawaii Island and its communities. Both organizations are also committed to education, public outreach, and
informed discussion.
HIEDB and HLPC members, and other stakeholders are looking for information on genetically modified organisms
(GMO) in order to understand the ongoing debate and make informed decisions.
In an effort to provide such information, HIEDB and HLPC are co-hosting a GMO Summit on August 19`h.
Registration is now open and you are invited to the Hawaii Island GMO Summit being co-hosted by HIEDB and
HLPC(registration form attached). Seats are limited and the deadline for registration is Wednesday, August 14`h
This invitation shall not be construed as a press release or as an invitation to the general public

Communication and the Statistical Assessment Service(STATS)at George Mason University;

3. Martina Newell-McGloughlin, Director of the University of California System-wide Biotechnology Research and
Education Program(UCBREP)which covers all ten UC campuses and three national laboratories(Lawrence
Livermore, Lawrence Berkeley, and Los Alamos);
4. Hector Valenzuela, University of Hawaii at Manoa College of Tropical Agriculture and Human Resources; and
Karl Haro von Mogel a Ph.D. Candidate in Plant Breeding and Plant Genetics at the University of Wisconsin,
Madison
