RE: Ad Hoc Committee Relating to Genetically Engineered Crops and Plants V -
I request that the scope of the Committee's investigation include:
1) The safety of existing papaya; and
2) The economic impact and competitiveness on existing agriculture, including but not
limited to farming, ranching, breeding and horticulture; and
3) The impact and viability of future agriculture, including but not limited to farming,
ranching, breeding and horticulture; and
4) Reasonable and pro-active ways to encourage, allow, and/or promote "co-existence"
of traditional/conventional, scientific, bio-technological methods of cultivation,
propagation, and development of stronger disease resistant plants and animals with
"organic" methods; and
5) The possibility of setting aside a protected area to become a heritage seed bank and
gene bank to preserve the biodiversity of organisms, while allowing agriculture as an
industry to continue and hopefully to flourish.
