I just found an excellent"Policies and Strategy Plan for Organics" that another island uses that would more than compliment the HI state agricultural functional plan. If we say no to GMOs and the 18 tons of pesticides dumped on Kauai by the large GMO companies, know that HI can move on this plan. New information: The attached photo of a"Bubble Gum"masking agent bottle was shared by Kyle Smith, attorney for the Waimea residents in their lawsuit against Pioneer on Kauai, at their presentation two weeks ago in Waimea, Kauai. He stated that the bottle was retreived directly from one of the Pioneer test fields in Waimea. It's on the utube presentation by He also shared that many of the residents of Waimea have said that they often describe a"sickly sweet"smell when the companies are spraying. The only purpose of"Bubble Gum"is an attempt to cover up the chemical odors of the pesticides that they are spraying on the people of our island. As a health care practice management consultant to professionals since 1985 doing health and environmental research, I put in testimony studies on the environmental harms of GMOs and the issues with regulation of GMOs. I've herein enclosing recent noteworthy compilations and independent peer reviewed studies and vital information related to GMO health harms. There is "ample" peer review evidence of harm--even more so recently. Enclosed are compilations and 25+ 30 independent studies of GMO health harms--just to give you an idea that FDA safety regulations are not up to speed on the data, nor is political will at state and federal levels to date. Marginalizing harm just as "anecdotal" or associative on poisons, with introductions of viruses, bacterial, and fungi in novel ways makes no sense. Particularly given a wealth of information transparent and obtainable on the web of peer review studies. Other countries use the "precautionary principle" in legislation of foods and crops which makes sense with the introduction of toxins. The US uses the GRAS standard (Generally regarded as safe until proven otherwise claiming to balance benefits with adverse impacts and using the standard of hospitalization and death as determinants health wise for removal of a product). Further the FDA standards quite frankly appear to be based on quite a weak standard that certainly doesn't come close to what we now know about adulterated food and how genetics and body processes actually work. That's another discussion. While there are more health programs now than ever, your every day citizen doesn't have the time or knowledge to go into depth of discovery. Hence, the need for protection by our administrators locally at this point. It's time to rethink the direction we are headed with biotech in HI and the imbalance to the eco-system and health of our people, and an amendment to the HI Right to Farm Bill. GMOs in baby formula: Of all the issues with GMO foods, baby formula to me is the most important because it affects our most vulnerable--babies and young growing children. To the disbelief of many, it's a shock to discover that human studies have not been required by the FDA for safety of GMOs unless something has changed recently in the US. Europe doesn't allow GMOs in baby food until at least 6 months of age. Baby formula studies would seem to me to be the EASIEST to prove the effects on childhood diabetes and GMO impacts if the studies would "look" into GMOs in formula and not just "assume" they are safe because "the FDA says so." The FDA standard of safety is only in relationship to very limited parameters. The FDA relies on the biotech industry studies--which have NOT been human studies thus far--let alone related to infant formulas originally put on the market without public knowledge of GMOs or GMO labeling. (ie. In the course of analysis to identify potential allergens in GMO crops, the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) has belatedly discovered that the most common genetic regulatory sequence in commercial GMOs also encodes a significant fragment of a viral gene (Podevin and du Jardin 2012). This finding has serious ramifications for crop biotechnology and its regulation, but possibly even greater ones for consumers and farmers. This is because there are clear indications that this viral gene (called Gene VI) might not be safe for human consumption. Recently reported to the FDA Biotech division was Hector Venzuela's discovery of hidden viral gene in Hawaii Papayas. U of H has been without comment since March, despite request to investigate. A few organizations in HI have collected studies of harmful health effects from GMOs. I noted the Safe Food Food Foundation maceyj001 @hawaii.rr.com presented over 70 and Babes against Biotech naomi Carmona <babesagainstbiotech @icloud.com> have over 200 studies on GMO health and environmental harms presented during legislative committee meetings in the state House in 2013 session. U tube shows a wealth of information on what is occuring to our planet by GE and pesticides destroying the natural eco-balance in our environment, let alone disrupting our bodily systems. I don't dispute that there may be a benefit to GE and pesticides, but only when necessary--not as a way to take over the natural world, further creating a wake of health hazards by laws and funding schemes that support the biotech industry in HI, and turning aside funding to support organic and regenerative farming and nontransparent food labeling practices. Hawaii stands in the balance. A compilation of these peer reviewed studies below "show the GMO ingredients themselves to be toxic, and numerous studies show the effects of the GMO process impacts on the health of the body and transference." Approvals for GE crops and products occurred with a relatively new science that has had many of its assumptions and precepts disproved since. The FDA and EPA have not caught up with the new information, nor has their been political will to do so by the state or federal government to date. In my professional opinion, to not exercise "precautionary principle" on toxins, bacteria, viruses and fungi and use the basis of GRAS "Generally Regarded As Safe until proven otherwise" makes no sense. The biotech scientific arguments are based on old data, not new findings, even though there have been 8/5/2013 Page 10 of 10 findings of harms since I first discovered inadvertantly in 2006 GMOs were not just given to pigs and began peer review research to see what was true. Chemically grown crops and foods produced locally may be cheaper than organic and may aid the local economy, but they pollute the ground water, kill the soil food web, decrease the soil's ability to sequester climate-destabilizing greenhouse gases, broadcast pesticides into the air, can poison farmworkers, and incrementally poison consumers with toxic residues on their foods.
