Aloha Council members,
I am not able to attend the County Council meeting tomorrow to hear the discussion relating to banning future GMO
agriculture crops but would like to share my view with you all.
I believe that this issue is so huge that it needs further study before further GMO crops are allowed. Research on
how it has affected other places in the world that have allowed GMO agriculture to look at what has happened there.
I have read articles that discussed how non-GMO farmers lost their farms due to cross pollination from the wind or
bees or unintentional mixing of the product. Another issue is that most GMO plants are sterile require the grower
buy the seeds from Monsato every time. Monsanto or other GMO seed producer will then control the world seed
market. To me these issues are real and cold happen very easily. Control of the seed banks could have devastating
effects on all of us.
As islands Hawaii is probably the only place in the US that we can control what comes in or out. Banning further
GMO will protect us against accidental cross pollination issues. We already seen "this fear" happen with the papaya
industry when cannot even get a GMO free papaya.
I know that most of food is already a GMO product coming in from other parts of the world, but I want to have that
choice. If GMO crops of allowed that choice will be taken away.
Hawaii island could potentially be the capitol of GMO free foods that can be marketed locally as well as over the
seas for those who see the benefit of GMO free foods which I believe is gaining momentum and will continue to
grow. Let's capitalize on that vs using our precious lands for these crops that I do not believe have been PROVEN as
safe in the long run. GMO have pesticides and herbicides/fungicide genes embedded into them. Is this what we want
for our families? We are just learning about all the health effects of the antibiotics and hormones in chicken, beef
and pork to make them bigger and fatter. What has it done to the health of our children.
This issue is too BIG to allow it to happen any more than is already here. YOU have control of what could have
negative affects on all of us forever.
I ask that you all do your research for yourselves and I am sure you will support Bill 79 and keep Hawaii healthy and
in the hands of our people at least for the next 30-50 years when the full effects of GMO will be seen.
