A RESOLUTION URGING THE UNIVERSITY OF HAWAII BOARD OF REGENTS
TO APPROVE A BACHELOR OF SCIENCE IN ENGINEERING DEGREE PROGRAM
AT THE UNIVERSITY OF HAWAII AT HILO.
WHEREAS, engineers play a vital role in the design and development of a wide range of
useful devices, critical infrastructure, and technical services which maintain and improve the
quality of life for the people of Hawai`i; and
WHEREAS, it is essential for the County of Hawai`i to support and promote academic
endeavors in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (S.T.E.M.); and
WHEREAS, the Bachelor of Science in Engineering (B.S.E.) degree program is a
valuable academic opportunity for students graduating from island high schools and community
colleges; and
WHEREAS, the B.S.E. degree program provides the means to develop a technological
workforce to support existing and growing technology-based industries in Hawai`i; now,
therefore,
BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE COUNTY OF HAWAII that it
hereby urges the University of Hawai`i Board of Regents to approve a Bachelor of Science in
Engineering degree program at the University of Hawai`i at Hilo.
BE IT FINALLY RESOLVED that the County Clerk shall transmit a copy of this
resolution to the following:
1) Members of the University of Hawai`i Board of Regents: Chairperson John C.
Holzman, Vice Chairperson Saedene Ota, Vice Chairperson James H. Q. Lee, Mr.
Jeffrey Tangonan Acido, Mr. Eugene Ball III, Mr. Carl A. Carlson Jr., Mr. John C.
Dean, Mr. Chuck Y. Gee, Mr. Benjamin Asa Kudo, Ms. Coralie Chun Matayoshi,
Mr. Barry T. Mizuno, Mr. Randolph G. Moore, Mr. Tom H. Shigemoto, and Ms. Jan
Naoe Sullivan.
2) The Honorable Governor Neil Abercrombie; the Honorable Senate President Donna
