Your Committee on Finance, to which was referred Communication No. 390, reports as follows:
Communication No. 390, transmitted by Mayor William P. Kenoi dated August 15, 2013,
requests review and favorable recommendation of the nomination of Mr. Melvin S. Morimoto to
the County of Hawaii Salary Commission.
Mr. Morimoto is a lifelong resident of Hawai`i. From 1999 to 2011, he was the Kona Historical
Society museum manager. Mr. Morimoto has been a Director of the Kona Coffee Cultural
Festival since 1999, and currently serves as its President. He is a former member of the Hawai`i
Police Commission. Mr. Morimoto states that he is not affiliated with any political party. If
confirmed, he will serve a term to expire on December 31, 2017.
Ms. Char Shigemura, Executive Assistant to Mayor Kenoi, came forward to introduce Nominee
Morimoto. She provided background information, expressed the Mayor's support, and requested
the Council's favorable action of this appointment.
Mr. Morimoto requested the Council's consideration to serve on the County of Hawai`i Salary
Commission.
Mr. Morimoto is not required to be present at full Council for final confirmation.
Pursuant to Section 13-28, of the Hawai`i County Charter(2012 Edition), there shall be a salary
commission, consisting of nine members, appointed by the Mayor with the approval of the
Council.

Your Committee on Finance is in accord with the purpose and intent of Comm. No. 390, and
recommends confirmation of the appointment of Mr. Melvin S. Morimoto to the County of
Hawai`i Salary Commission.
