As struggling farmers in Hawaii County, we are faced daily with decisions that allow our business to succeed or fail based on a multitude of factors. We employ both sustainable and conventional management options and would embrace biotechnology that would allow us to minimize the use of dangerous pesticides by inserted resistance development. Conventional breeding does not allow for resistance to disease, only tolerance. This means that under severe environmental conditions, a disease can completely destroy your crop. Removing GE tools will not only reduce our ability to survive as farmers when the next severe disease enters the state but will also reduce our ability to compete in a global marketplace. We find it offensive that councilors who do not farm commercially and who have not met with farmers directly to discuss these misguided Bills, persist in assuming they know what is best for the community they supposedly represent. It makes you wonder who exactly do they represent and what is their agenda? Mahalo for your consideration, Brian and Jennifer Bushe C") cn —o c 4- J -C v,P 1 i N U) — Comm. No. 3/3. 2- Ref.
