To: counciltestimony @co.hawaii.hi.us Subject: Support for Bill 113. Aloha, Council I don't like it that there are two anti-GMO bills, it is a distraction and confuses the issues. That said, I prefer Councilperson Margaret Wille's Bill 113 because it reaffirms to the deeper principles of the public trust doctrine and the precautionary principle. Each bill has some good restrictions on genetically modified organisms but it is the deeper principles of public trust and environmental care that will endure beyond the regulation of this present GMO threat. Hawaii Island is a unique place and has a great natural heritage that is dieing and disappearing. We need to take a stand against this serious decline. We need to protect Hawaii Island's agricultural and ecological base because we need it. Concern for a healthy environment is our right and our duty to ourselves and our children. We the concerned citizens of Hawaii County understand the science of GMOs and we do not trust it. We also understand what the concerns of the giant international biotech businesses and we are not their concern. The so-call science paid for by the biotech industry reflects their main concern of larger profits. But, of course that is their job. What is the job that concerns you, the Hawaii County Council? The County's only legitimate concern is to serve the Health and well being of all its citizens. When push comes to shove your main purpose is to serve we the people. Your concerns should lie with health and well being that stands the test of time. It is up to this council, for it is within your authority, to establish enduring principles that will stand and defend the health concerns of the people of Hawaii County. And, It is up to the citizens of Hawaii County to hold this council to account to its duty to effectively manage the natural heritage that now is in your hands. Please see to it that this government leaves a legacy of health to our grandchildren and to their grandchildren. Whatever comes of these anti-GMO laws and associated committees let this be the beginning of the discussion on what is best for the natural and cultural heritage of this unique place.
