Subject: Testimony AGAINST Bill 113
My name is Richard Manshardt. I am a professor and plant geneticist in CTAHR at UH Manoa.
I have 30 years of research and teaching experience in crop sciences at UH, including conventional crop
breeding and development of virus-resistant, genetically engineered (GMO) papaya varieties for Hawaii
growers. I am providing testimony on my own behalf, not officially presenting the position of CTAHR
or UH on this bill.
I respectfully oppose Bill 113.
Please vote against this anti-GMO bill, because the national and international scientific communities are
clear that commercial, approved genetically engineered (GE) crops and foods are as safe as non-GE
crops and foods. In addition, conventional farmers and ranchers (Hamakua Farm Bureau, Hawaii
Papaya Industry Association, Hawaii Banana Industry Association, Hawaii Cattlemen's Council, and
Hawaii Floriculture and Nursery Association) are united in their opposition to bans on new technologies
that could help them in the future to feed their families and provide jobs for the community.
Thanks!
