Subject: Notification of Certificate Presentation on October 16, 2013 at the scheduled
West Hawaii County Council Meeting
This is notification that I am sponsoring five certificates of recognition. We will be presenting
these certificates at the October 16th, 2013 scheduled Hawaii Council meeting. The Certificates
of Recognition will be presented to Jeff Maki, Shirley DeRego, Mike Varney, Kelly Hoyle and
Jerry Blevins for their brave actions rescuing a family of five from the treacherous rip current at
Pololu Valley. We will need 20 minutes for our presentation.

You are commended for your conspicuous and brave actions when you
rescued a family of five from the treacherous rip current at Pololu Valley
on June 09, 2013. You fought through the pounding surf and pulled three
people to safety which is remarkable but to then go back out and pull two
distressed victims, a father and a daughter through the unforgiving waves
to safety a second time is truly heroic.
You risked your own personal safety to save the lives of others. It is
without a doubt that your immediate response, perseverance and brave
actions played a vital role in bringing members of the family to safety.
On behalf of the People of Hawaii and the Council of the County of Hawai'i,
we wish to extend to you our sincere appreciation for your unselfish and
extraordinary act of heroism.

Duke DeRego Foundation, whose mission is to increase the safety of
swimmers at West Hawaii beaches by way of the installation of rescue
tubes. The rescue tubes have proven to be instrumental in saving lives

foundation also educates about ocean safety and first aid as a life saving

installation of the first two rescue tubes at the dangerous and unmanned Pololu Valley
beach. Your individual effort placing these rescue tubes at that beach helped to save a
family of five from the dangerous rip current off Pololu Valley on June 09, 2013.
Recognizing a public safety need and addressing it deserves recognition and
demonstrates how one individual can make a difference. You took it upon yourself to
improve the quality of life on this island by making it a safer place to live and play.
You did so without any expectation of recognition for your good deed. Your actions
will assuredly serve as an example to others.

In Recognition Of Your Acts of Heroism
You are both commended for your acts of heroism as first responders.
Kelly you are to be praised for your alert actions assisting with the rescue
tubes and by helping the victims to safety once they were out of the riptide
and in shallower water.
Jerry, aware of the lack of phone service in the valley you sprinted up to
the top of the trail to the overlook to get a signal and call for emergency
assistance. In response to your call a helicopter was dispatched and the
distressed victim was rushed to the hospital.
Your immediate responses and actions played a vital role in saving the
lives of these family members.
On behalf of the people of Hawaii and the Hawaii County Council,you are
honored for your quick response, alert actions and valuable assistance
which helped save the lives of the family of five.
