Subject: Geothermal Development
Aloha Councilmembers,
This letter is to inform you that I vehemently oppose geothermal fracking in the Puna
District. I have been a resident of Puna since 1975, when we purchased land and built our
home. We have raised our children, worked, and volunteered in the community for over 35
years.
Having lived through the technical mistakes and the improper environmental damage of
previous geothermal explorations done in Puna, I am extremely concerned that further
geothermal development, especially using fracking would once again be allowed to destroy our
environment, our health, and our right to live peacefully in our homes.
The lower Puna district is a unique and beautiful relatively undeveloped area that I refer
to as the last American Paradise. This area has drawn visitors from around the world to
experience it's beauty and serenity. Due to volcanic activity we have lost much of the Puna
coast that was previously available for family recreation purposes as well as the use of ocean
resources for subsistence. The remaining coastline area in lower Puna is all we have left for
recreation and gathering. The geothermal heated tide pool at Ahalanui is unique in this world
and is bringing world wide visitors to experience it's beauty and uniqueness. The possibility of
having a geothermal development essentially across the street from this coastline, with it's
accompanying noise and pollution will rob all of Hawaii Island's residents, and visitors as well,
of enjoying the unique gift of this remaining paradise.
My previously expressed concerns do not even touch on the aspect of cultural disrespect
that would be inherent in the destruction of this area known as the home of Goddess Pele. I
am aghast that the legacy of Princess Pauahi may be used to develop this destructive
exploitation of Hawaiian lands.
Please do not allow greed for the quick dollar to usurp your responsibility to the aina, nor
to the people you represent. Of course we must use technology to enhance life for all of us;
that requires judicious decisions that will benefit, not blight, our community and our aina.
